about
i'm steve. you probably know me as the crying nintendo kid. i also write software, nobody asks about that.
the nintendo thing
1988, my parents got me an nes and i lost my mind. they filmed the whole thing. in 2017 i put the tape on youtube and it blew up overnight. the local news called it "crying nintendo kid still sobbing 29 years later." they're not wrong.
20+ years of writing code and my biggest hit is still 7 year old me screaming at a gray box.
the rest of it
- 1988: cried at a nintendo. peaked.
- 2000–2004: uconn. showed up a music major, left a computer science major. wrote an nfa-to-dfa converter, a 6502 assembler, battleship, and a bunch of other stuff. it's all up here, unedited. judge away.
- 2004: pokernator 3000, a texas hold'em odds calculator. yes, that's the name. the math is perfect. knowing the odds and actually winning are two different things.
- 2007: a monster hunter freedom armor database for the psp. been playing since freedom and never stopped. pretty sure a couple forums linked to it.
- 2017: posted the crying video. famous for something i did at 7.
- early 2020s: ended up in a bunch of video game docs, including console wars (2020).
- 2025: started the channel back up as cryingnintendokid2.0.
- 2026: had claude rebuild all my old sites. told it "go autonomous, i'm going to bed" and woke up to working websites. most productive i've ever been while unconscious. conscious as well.
- now: blending, a tile-laying board game i'm working on. it's not done. nothing here is done.
music and magic
my instagram bio says "i love only the most annoying hobbies" and i stand by it.
- trumpet. a couple years after my mom died i picked the horn back up, and honestly it saved me. i'm an aphant, i can't picture anything in my head. everyone talks about "seeing the sheet music" and i just don't have that. so i went on a journey to learn to play by ear, and now that's the only way i play.
- card magic. started in early 2025. i film everything at up to 2,000 fps, which is great for seeing every single mistake. my pass is starting to hold up under slow mo. mostly. i've been reading ladanye's book for months and it's still all greek to me. not confident in a single one of my deceptions. i will persist, however 😂
card magic is also how i figured out i have adhd, the version of attention deficit that has too much attention. and that i'm a polymath, which is a fancy way of saying my family could not be more annoyed with me.
all of it is inspired by jason ladanye, josh norbido, harrison kramer, and @conjuretechnique. go watch them, they're way better.
